Summary:

Pesticide poisoning is a major global health hazard that needs immediate care. Although the outcome of OPC poisoning is known, very little effort has been made to elucidate the outcome of non-OPC compound poisoning. This report aimed to compare the outcome of OPCs vs non-OPCs in our setting.

This observational study was conducted in Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital for a period of 1 year. A total of 232 confirmed pesticide poisoning cases were sorted out for OPC and non-OPC compounds, interviewed and observed following consenting procedures and ensuring ethical measures. Data analysis was done by SPSS 20. The study procedure was performed in accordance with the current declaration of Helsinki.

The average presentation of the poisoning subjects was 25.77±10.94 SD (yrs) with almost equal portion of gender. The incidences of OPCs and non-OPCs were almost the same (n=112, 48.3% vs n=120, 51.7%). The identified non-OPC compounds were cypermethrin (n=23), paraquat (n=18), aluminum phosphide (n=16), carbofuran (n=9) and lambda cyalothrin (n=8), whereas the most common forms of OPC poisoning were chlorpyrifos (n=51), malathion (n=27), chlorpyrifos + cypermethrin (n=16), dimethoate (n=10) and phentothoate (n=4). The incidence of poisoning was most related to suicide attempts (n=212; 93.4%). Despite the significant difference in clinical presentation between OPCs and non-OPCs, there was no difference in outcome (p=0.089), and overall mortality was not dependent on poisoning type [(OPC vs non-OPC): OR 1.37 (5% CI (0.41 – 4.54), p=0.607].
