Summary:
Bacteremia is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in both industrialized and developing nations. However, diagnosing bacteremia can be difficult for clinicians, particularly in people who have co-infections like malaria and HIV. A fast approach for diagnosing bacteremia in patients with co-morbidities is urgently needed to guide treatment. Blood culture is still the gold standard procedure, although it is costly and time intensive. On the other hand, a complete blood count (CBC) is a simple, inexpensive, and frequently available test. The CPD parameters of the CBC can be a wonderful independent alternative approach of diagnosing bacteremia. There is a scarcity of information about the use of CBC values to detect bacteremia. Therefore, this study is undertaken to evaluate CBC parameters at admission as a new tool in detecting bacteremia among patients. This will be case-control study at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, Rajshahi for a duration of six months. Ethical clearance will be obtained from the ethical review committee (ERC) of Rajshahi Medical College. Participants will be included after taking informed written consents. A total of 100 diagnosed bacteremia patients with clinical symptoms and blood culture report will be taken as case group. Another 100 healthy individual from blood bank donor with no clinical symptoms and CBC report will be taken as control groups. CBC samples of bacteremia patients will be collected either before or on the day of the blood culture sampling will be analyzed on the Sysmex XN-1000 analyzer. All the variables of CPD will be collected from the analyzer for both bacteremia patients and the normal controls and will be recorded in a case record form (CRF). Collected data will be systematically described and summarized by using both descriptive and/or inferential statistics. Analyses will be performed with the statistical program Statistical Package for Social Science SPSS 25.0 (IBM Armonk, New York). P value of <0.05 will be considered as significant. The study will follow all the regulations of current declaration of Helsinki.
