Summary:
Jaundice is a widespread gastrointestinal disorder that affects people globally. It can result from an increase in bilirubin production or a decrease in its excretion due to various liver-related conditions, such as hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, Gilbert syndrome, cholestasis, alcohol or drug abuse, autoimmune disorders, hemolytic anemia, and liver cancer. While conventional medicine has introduced new chemical medications, there is a growing interest in exploring the traditional use of medicinal plants worldwide. Ethnomedicinal plants play a crucial role in the lives of rural and tribal communities, with thousands of medicinal plant species being utilized to treat various diseases, including jaundice. These plants are regarded as essential therapeutic resources in minimizing the impact of these diseases. Therefore, the objective of the proposed study is to explore the utilization of traditional therapies in the management of jaundice among patients in Bangladesh.
This cross-sectional study will be conducted in at outpatient department and In-patient department in Dhaka Medical College Hospital among patients diagnosed with jaundice who have utilized traditional therapies before being admitted at the study place. A total of 400 patients will be included in this study. Informed written consent will be taken from each participant. Prior starting the study, ethical clearance will be obtained from the Dhaka Medical College ethical committee. Detailed demographic information, types of traditional therapies, frequency of use traditional therapies including herbal remedies, kabiraji treatment, spiritual way of management and others, duration of therapy usage, perceived effectiveness and any negative effects of these therapy will be noted in a preformed structured questionnaire. The collected data will be sorted and will be analyzed with SPSS 25.0.
